Tumacácori Hosts Celebration
 of Día de los Muertos

El Día de los Muertos, also known as All Soul’s Day, has roots in many Tumacácori Mission traditions including the customs of native residents, mission-era Jesuit and Franciscan priests, Spanish colonists, Mexican settlers, and even citizens of the United States arriving in the 19th century. On this holiday, Tumacácori National Historical Park offers the opportunity to remember deceased friends and loved ones. “Tumacácori is proud to celebrate this beloved holiday with friends, neighbors, and visitors from around the world.” says Superintendent Mike Medrano.
The adobe walls of Tumacácori’s historic church will shelter a traditional Día de los Muertos altar to hold ofrendas (offerings) in memory of loved ones. From Sunday, October 16 through Wednesday, November 2, visitors are invited to leave photographs, gifts, tokens, messages, toys, or other traditional items as part of this community installation. Personal items left on the altar can be collected from the park following Día de los Muertos, through November 12.
On the evening of Día de los Muertos, Wednesday November 2, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the park will offer free entrance, traditional treats, and a craft for visitors to commemorate the holiday. Visitors will be able to explore the historic mission church and cemetery by candlelight. For more information, call the Tumacácori visitor center, 520-377-5060, or visit the park website, at nps.gov/tuma.

At the Center for Neurosciences Foundation (CNSF), we consider knowledge the best means for creating change in belief and behavior. The earlier that people have information which helps them choose brain-healthy lifestyles and habits, the more powerful the potential long term impact. Established in 2010, CNSF is the brainchild of neurologists, neurosurgeons and basic neuroscientists who seek to share neuroscience information with residents of Southern Arizona. Involvement of the University of Arizona faculty and student volunteers enhances our ability to address our goals.

The Sahuarita Library has invited us to bring our Brain Bus down for "What's Up Wednesday." The Brain Bus is a school Bus converted into a mobile workspace. We travel with it to community events and schools with a well-tested and growing curriculum focused on basic brain organization, function, and plasticity, while utilizing hands-on activities.

NOVA Home Loans has teamed up with Reid Park Zoo for the first installment of its “Where We Call Home” giving campaign. The campaign seeks to celebrate the people and places where Tucsonans call home by championing local artists, nonprofits, locations and patrons to join NOVA as it gives back.

NOVA has commissioned local artist, Pen Macias, "The Desert Pen," to paint two 8ftx8ft Tucson-centric takes on home and the first piece will be located at Reid Park Zoo starting November 14, 2022.

Community members can participate in the campaign by posting a picture in front of the art and tagging NOVA and Reid Park Zoo on social media. NOVA will then donate $10 per post to the zoo up to $10,000. Other nonprofit recipients of the giving campaign will include The Boys and Girls Club, Youth on Their Own and Habitat for Humanity.

NOVA Home Loans has a long history of supporting and giving back to the Tucson community. This has been fundamental to its culture and one of its core values since its founding over 40 years ago. Just recently, in 2021, NOVA donated $180,000 to Tucson nonprofits. Over 20 years ago, NOVA started the annual Miracle en el Barrio, the holiday toy giveaway that helps ensure children in the Tucson community receive a holiday gift. This year’s Miracle en el Barrio will take place on December 23 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm at St. John’s Church, 602 W. Ajo Way. In 2015 NOVA brought college football bowl games back to Tucson with the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl. NOVA sponsors many local youth sports leagues and school teams. They’re a sponsor of University of Arizona athletics, the Tucson Sugar Skulls, and the 2022 Tour de Tucson. They support the Tucson Botanical Gardens, Tucson Jazz Festival, and many other organizations and cultural events year-round. NOVA Home Loans invites everyone to spread this news and join them in celebrating the people and places that make Tucson a vibrant, diverse, perfect place to live.
