4/19/2024 -5/26/2024 | April 15, 2024, Tubac, AZ. Tubac Center of the Arts, (TCA) announces the opening of the work of this internationally known artist with the last public showing of his work. Featuring wood scu;ptures and sumi Ink Drawings, Okura’s work has a timeless and international appeal. Other examples of his work are part of the permanent collection of major art museums throughout the U.S. including the University of Kansas, the Smithsonian Asian Art Museuim, the Asian Art Museum of San Franciso, and both the Chicago Art Institue and St. Louis Museum of Art Curated by Jane M. Farmer, this exhibit showcases Okura’s work in three-dimensional wood art that solidified Okura’s independence from a more traditional work to a more direct interpreatio of his relationahip with nature. During his lifetime (1935-1994) he traveled throughout the United Stated but especially responded to what he saw in nature in the southwest where he absorbed the landscape and scale of these open spaces. Okura’s work has never been strongly influenced by the work of other artists, but was consistently concerned with a very direct interpretation of his own relationship with nature. He first traveled to the American southwest in 1969 and always loved this part of the world.. Many of the works on display come from the collection of his sister, Taka Okura, a current resident of Green Valley, Airzona. Visitors can learn more and plan their by going to TCA’s website at https://tubacarts.org. About Tubac Center of the Arts Tubac Center of the Arts is an artistic gem in the Southwest.
